Furlong, Van Allen Honored by USTFCCCA as Mideast Region Athlete, Coach of the Year
Nov. 16, 2010
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Johns Hopkins junior Cecilia Furlong and head coach Bobby Van Allen were honored by the USTFCCCA as the Mideast Region Athlete and Coach of the Year, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon. Furlong is the first Hopkins runner in program history to receive athlete of the year honors, while Van Allen wins his third straight coach of the year award, having also received the accolade in 2008 and 2009.
Furlong became the first runner in Johns Hopkins history to win the individual regional championship as she narrowly defeated Delaware Valley's Caitlin Dorgan by one tenth of a second in a photo finish that took almost 30 minutes to determine. Furlong also won the Centennial Conference individual title earlier this year.
Under Van Allen's guidance, Johns Hopkins has won three straight Mideast Regional Championships and three consecutive Centennial Conference titles. The Blue Jays captured the regional crown last weekend in convincing fashion with 68 team points, placing three runners in the top 10 and defeating second-place Dickinson (126) by 58 points.
The fourth-ranked Blue Jays will make their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championships this Saturday in Waverly, IA.
