Paulsen Leads Blue Jays 13th Place Finish At NCAA Championship

HANOVER, IN - The Johns Hopkins women's cross country team finished 13th among the top 32 teams in the country in just its second all-time appearance at the NCAA Championship. The Blue Jays were led by junior Laura Paulsen who finished in 31st place at 21:37.36 to earn NCAA All-America honors. Juniro Mira Patel cross the finished line just 17 seconds later at 21:54.94 for 41st place. Senior Emma Hiza earned 137th place for her 22:44.95 6k run. Freshman Cecilia Furlong finished in 22:59.55 to place 164th. Senior Rachel Hogen clocked in at 23:10.13 for 180th place, followed by senior Mary O'Grady (23:46.14, 237th) and sophomore Christina Valerio ( 24:33.35, 274th). Middlebury won the national team championship with its 179 points. Calvin (237) and Williams (240) placed second and third respectively. The top 15 teams are listed below. "We improved so much individually and as a team from last year," said head coach Bobby Van Allen. "We improved 16 spots as a team. The team scores were pretty close together and it just shows the level of competition that we were up against." The Blue Jays lose just two seniors and will look to make another run to the NCAA Championship in 2009.
