JHU Wins Oberlin Inter Regional Rumble

OBERLIN, OH - The second-ranked Johns Hopkins women's cross country team placed five runners in the top 20 to place first at the Oberlin College Inter Regional Rumble on Saturday. The Blue Jays totaled 62 points to easily beat second-place Case Western (105 points). Host Oberlin (128 points), NYU (174) and Brockport (178) rounded out the top five in the final team standings. In all 25 teams competed in the event.
Oberlin's Joanna Johnson won the individual title by more than 30 seconds as she clocked in at 21:03.
Senior Laura Paulsen led the way for the Blue Jays as she placed second overall with a time of 21:37. JHU's five scoring runners all placed in the top 20. No other team had more than three runners in the top 20 and only one other team had three runners in the top 30. JHU's top five finishers all finished within 45 seconds of each other.
In addition to Paulsen's efforts, the Blue Jays got an eighth-place finish from sophomore Cecilia Furlong (21.58). Senior Mira Patel (13th / 22:02), junior Christian Valerio (19th / 22:19) and freshman Liz Provost (20th / 22:20) rounded out the top five finishers for the Blue Jays. Seniors Mary O'Grady (28th / 22:39) and Nadia McMillan (33rd / 22:44) also placed in the top 35 as the Blue Jays' top seven runners all finished before the fifth-place finisher for any of the competing teams.
This was the final tuneup for the Blue Jays before they head to the Centennial Conference Championships on October 31. Johns Hopkins won its first Centennial title last season.
