Fifth-Ranked Johns Hopkins Cruises to Baltimore Metro Championship
Sept. 4, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior Laura Paulsen claimed her fourth straight Baltimore Metro Women's Cross Country individual title and the fifth-ranked Blue Jays placed seven runners among the top eight finishers to easily claim the team title Friday afternoon at Oregon Ridge Park. The Blue Jays totaled 17 points to win the team championship for the second straight year. Division I Towson University was second with 46 points, while McDaniel (107), Loyola (111) and Coppin State (155) rounded out the top five in the eight-team field.
Paulsen claimed her fourth metro title as she clocked in at 18:27.15 to win by 12 seconds over teammate Mira Patel (18:39.03). Sophomore Cecilia Furlong made it a clean sweep of the top three spots as she out-sprinted Towson's Kaylin Gilmartin-Donoghue to the line and finished with a time of 18:51.93. Gilmartin-Donoghue was less than a second behind at 18:52.77.
The Blue Jays secured the team title on the strength of a four-person pack that claimed spots five through eight. Senior Mary O'Grady (5th / 18:55.04), freshman Liz Provost (6th / 18:56.62), senior Nadia McMillan (7th / 19.04.46) and junior Christina Valerio (8th / 19.09.02) provided the depth the Blue Jays needed to win the title as Towson grabbed the five spots just after they finished.
Johns Hopkins, which placed 13th at the NCAA Division III Championships last season, will next be in action on Saturday, September 12 when the Blue Jays compete at the Salty Dog Invitational at Navy.
