BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) of the Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team was named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 Second Team. This is the third time Cappelaere has received all-district honors, being selected to the third team in 2007 and 2008. She brings Hopkins' total all-district selections to seven.
The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
Cappelaere was a captain of the 2009 Blue Jays that finished the season with a record of 16-10 overall. As an outside hitter, she recorded team highs of 235 kills and 258 digs on the season. She ranks eighth all-time at Hopkins in both categories with 922 kills and 1,057 digs. Cappelaere also had 17 service aces and 20 blocks on the season.
Off the court, Cappelaere has worked as a Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center. She spent time shadowing doctors at the Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital and the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the summer of 2009. In the summer of 2008 she worked on the event-planning team for The Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning. She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. A Public Health and History of Science & Medicine major, Cappelaere boasts a GPA of 3.62.
Cappelaere is the only player in Hopkins history to receive Academic All-District honors three consecutive years.
