Johns Hopkins Volleyball Weekly Notes
Oct. 22, 2003 BALTIMORE, MD - Last Week: The Blue Jays finished the week with a 3-0 record with wins over McDaniel, Bryn Mawr and Muhlenberg. JHU is currently riding a six match winning streak and have improved to 19-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Hopkins finished off each match this week in three games. This Week: Hopkins plays in a tri-match when they travel to Swarthmore, along with Dickinson on Saturday. The matches begin at 11:00 a.m. Both matches are crucial for the Blue Jays as they are still in contention for the Centennial Conference regular season title, where they are currently in second place (6-1) behind Gettysburg (6-0). The Coach: Scott Pennewill is in his first season at the helm for the Blue Jays. Pennewill brings a rich volleyball background to Homewood that spans 11 years at the Divsion I and II levels. Pennewill is the sixth coach in the program's history and has Hopkins off to a 19-6 record and a 6-1 mark in conference play. Team & Player Notes Baydala Earns Another Spot on Weekly Honor Roll: Junior Betsy Baydala has once again been selected for the Centennial Conference weekly honor roll. This marks the sixth time in seven weeks that Baydala has been selected. The co-captain has led the Blue Jays to a 19-6 overall record and has become a catalyst for their offensive attack. She leads JHU with 852 (9.36 APG) assists this season and has chipped in with 315 digs (3.76 DPG). Baydala ranks third all-time in the program's history with 2,545 assists. Monica Tremblay 744 1993-94Kaliades Stepping it Up in Final Season: Senior outside hitter Stephanie Kaliades has really stepped up her play during the final weeks of the season. She has led the Blue Jays in kills over the last nine matches. JHU has gone 7-2 over that period. Kaliades is also tied for the team lead in aces with 30. Just recently Kaliades surpassed the 1,000 kills mark for her career. She is only the third player in the program's history to accomplish the feat and currently ranks third all-time with 1,100 kills. Stephanie Kaliades 1,056 2000, 02-pres Home Sweet Home:Hopkins has been dominant at home this season starting off 13-3 in Goldfarb Gymnasium. They have hosted the Maryland State Tournament and JHU Invitational, losing in the finals during both tournaments. The third loss was a 3-2 heartbreaker to Gettysburg on October 1st. Kay Shines in Rookie Season: Freshman libero Lizzie Kay has immediately become a top player in the Centennial Conference as her unselfish play has helped guide the Blue Jays to a 19-6 record and second place in the conference. As of last week Kay was second in the conference with 4.84 digs per game average and 373 in total. Kay has started all 25 matches and already has displayed leadership skills on the floor, which is a positive sign for the program over the next three years. Kay currently has recorded 407 kills this season, which ties her for fourth place for the most kills in a single season. Hajj Becomes a Factor: A pre-season injury hampered sophomore middle blocker Jen Hajj for the beginning of the season. Hajj has fought her way back onto the court and currently leads the Blue Jays with 50 blocks this season. Hajj has also chipped in with 153 kills (2.15 KPG) this season along with 15 aces. In a 3-0 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday Hajj delivered five important aces. Jhu vs. Dickinson: The Red Devils come into this match with a 10-13 overall mark and are 4-2 in the Centennial Conference. After losing the first four matches in the series to Dickinson, JHU has ripped off 16 straight wins dating back to 1991 and own a 16-4 advantage in a series that started back in 1987.
Jhu vs. Swarthmore: The Garnet come in with a12-16 record and are 3-3 in conference play. Hopkins has already knocked off Swarthmore, during the JHU Invitational, 3-0 back on September 27th. The Blue Jays have now taken the last nine matches dating back to 1994 and have a 12-4 edge in the series that started in 1987.
