Johns Hopkins, Haverford Team for "Digging For a Cure" Initiative
Oct. 2, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins and Haverford women's volleyball teams will meet Saturday afternoon (October 4) in a key Centennial Conference match in Goldfarb Gymnasium on the Johns Hopkins campus (1 pm). While the outcome of the match will have a significant impact on the Centennial Conference standings, it will hardly be the most important thing that happens at the match as the Blue Jays and Fords are using this match to raise funds for Breast Cancer research through the AVCA's "Digging for a Cure" initiative.
The 11 schools in the Centennial Conference will use the dig totals from selected matches throughout the month of October to raise money for Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC). LBBC is a program based out of Haverford, Pennsylvania that offers various programs to help those fighting the disease and also provides information and support for family and friends.
Members of each of the 11 teams in the Centennial Conference have solicited donations to support the initiative based on the number of digs their team accumulates during its designated match. Individuals can make donations based on each individual dig ($1 per dig for example) or make a set donation to support the cause. Donations will be accepted at the Johns Hopkins-Haverford match on Saturday.
All funds raised from the 11 matches (each team in the league will utilize one of its home matches in the month of October as its "Digging for the Cure" match) will go directly to the LBBC. The entire donation will be presented to the LBBC during the Centennial Conference Semifinals on November 8 (to be played at the site of the number one seed in the tournament).
This will be the third consecutive year that the 11 volleyball-playing institutions in the Centennial Conference have joined together to battle cancer. The schools raised a combined $13,500 during the 2006 and 2007 seasons with that money being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
