Aug. 30, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - Head coach Greg Giovanazzi and the Johns Hopkins volleyball team capped an impressive opening weekend, winning a pair of matches Friday and capturing two matches on Saturday at Goldfarb Gymnasium to begin the 2008 season at 4-0. Hopkins defeated DeSales and Geneva on Saturday, both in three sets, to capture its second straight JHU Invitational title. Giovanazzi is just the second head coach in program history to start his career at Hopkins with four straight wins at 4-0. The Blue Jays led 14-10 after a DeSales timeout and outscored the Bulldogs 11-6 down the stretch to take the set. Allison Cappelaere capped the first set with an ace and did the same in the second, a 25-18 win. DeSales came out strong in the third set against Hopkins, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Jays remained undefeated in tournament play at 3-0 by taking a 25-21 win in the final stanza. Alex Zenoff had nine kills, while Amanda Lewis had 29 assists to lead the Blue Jays. Sharon Uliana controlled the middle for DeSales, coming up with 32 assists, while Jen Mellon had 11 kills. Up next for Hopkins was Geneva College, which emerged 2-0 from the first day of tournament play. Playing for the title, Hopkins took Geneva in three sets to earn its second-consecutive JHU Invitational title. Hopkins swept the Golden Tornadoes in three sets, hitting .310, converting 44 kills with just eight errors. Zenoff and Cappelaere led the attack for the Blue Jays against Geneva, with 11 kills and 14 kills respectively. Lewis recorded 27 assists in the win, which extended Hopkins' home win streak to 16 matches dating back to the 2007 season. Runner-up, Widener University finished the JHU Invitational at 3-1, followed by Geneva at 2-2.
Six student-athletes were named to the JHU Invitational All-Tournament Team. Elizabeth Fisher (Geneva), Allison Cappelaere (JHU), Devan Green (Widener), Amanda Lewis (JHU), Jen Mellon (DeSales) and Megan Smith (Goucher) each received all-tournament honors.
