Volleyball Blue Jays Take Third in Centennial Preseason Poll
Aug. 18, 2005 LANCASTER, PA - In 2004, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team ended the regular season as a third place team and are projected to finish the same way in 2005, taking the third spot in the Centennial Conference Preseason Poll, released Thursday. Getting the nod for the top spot is the defending conference champion, Gettysburg, who edged Franklin & Marshall by a single point, overall. However, the Diplomats received five first place votes, to Gettysburg's four. Hopkins took home the remaining two first-place votes. The Blue Jays continued their winning ways under head coach Scott Pennewill last season, with an 18-10 record and a trip to the Centennial finals. Pennewill's overall record at Hopkins is now 41-19 in two seasons and his teams have posted a 17-3 conference mark over that span. Hopkins returns a seasoned team in 2005, led by seniors Jen Hajj and Katie O'Callaghan. Hajj, a middle back, posted the second-highest hitting percentage on the club last year and had a team-high 52 blocks. Outside hitter O'Callaghan's team-leading 367 kills last season give her a career total of 897, fifth-best at Hopkins. Her 44 aces also led the team in 2004. The season gets underway for the Blue Jays when they travel to cross-town rival Goucher September 1.
