BALTIMORE - Fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall (20-8) rallied from a 24-13 game four deficit to take down top-seeded Johns Hopkins (23-6), 3-1, in the semifinals of the 2005 Centennial Conference Volleyball Tournament at Goldfarb Gym on Saturday.

F&M will face Gettysburg, the second seed, in the conference championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Gettysburg rolled past third-seeded Haverford, 3-0, in the day's first match.

Hopkins came out swinging in the fourth, grabbing an early lead before extending the lead to 24-13 with an 11-3 run. The Diplomats quickly turned the tides back on the Blue Jays, as they closed the gap to 26-19 before scoring nine unanswered points to give them a 28-26 lead. F&M went on to take the game, 30-27, sealing the match victory.

The Diplomats opened the match with 30-17 and 30-28 wins, before Hopkins drew closer with a 30-26 game three win.

Leading the way for the Diplomats was the tandem of freshman Margot Phelan and sophomore Susan Taylor. Phelan knocked down 20 kills, a match-high, while Taylor contributed 18 for F&M. Senior Jackie Skibbie passed out 44 assists in the winning effort.

Hopkins seniors Katie O'Callaghan and Jen Hajj each had 16 kills to lead the Blue Jays. O'Callaghan picked up the double-double, collecting 15 digs. Freshman Amanda Lewis also posted a double-double, with 48 assists and 11 digs for the afternoon.

Gettysburg 3, Haverford 0

Gettysburg (19-12) made Haverford's (18-9) time in the 2005 Centennial Conference Volleyball Tournament short-lived, dispatching the Fords in just over one hour of play, 3-0, at Goldfarb Gym on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

The Bullets cruised in the first two games, blasting away at a .522 attack rate to take game one 30-14. Gettysburg picked up a quick win in game two, 30-16, before Haverford forced a close game three. The Fords narrowed the gap to 24-23 in the third, before Gettysburg concluded the match on a 6-3 run, winning 30-26.

Leading the way offensively for the Bullets was freshman Meghan McConville, who turned in a match-high 13 kills, hitting at a .526 clip. Senior setter Shannan Smith took match-high honors with 28 assists to go along with six kills and five digs.

Senior Heidi Jutsum led Haverford with eight kills. Leading the defensive effort for the Fords was senior Samantha Thomson, who picked up 14 digs, tops among all players.
