Hopkins Handles Hood, 3-0

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team swept past Hood, 3-0, on Thursday night in non-conference action at Goldfarb Gym. Hopkins won by set scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-17. The Blue Jays move above .500 to 12-11 with the win, while the Blazers drop their fourth straight contest and fall to 5-12 on the year.
With Hopkins leading 5-4 in the first set, senior Brittany Zimmer delivered a slew of strong serves to propel the Blue Jays to an 8-0 run to take a commanding 13-4 lead. JHU closed out the first set, 25-11, on a kill by sophomore Carolyn Mickelson.
Hopkins carried the momentum from its convincing first set victory into the second frame, using a 15-3 run in the middle of the set to take a 22-7 lead and eventually take the set, 25-13.
The final set was a bit closer and saw nine ties and eight lead changes, but the Blue Jays went on a 11-3 run with the score knotted at 14-14 to close out the match, 25-17.
Johns Hopkins was led by junior Melissa Cole, who posted 10 kills and 15 digs for her third consecutive double-double. Freshman Katia Charov notched a career-high 23 assists, while seniors KC Stingl and Alica Diehl each contributed double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively. Junior Sarah Feicht added seven kills and a team-best three block assists.
Freshman Amy Hagerdon paced Hood with 16 digs, 14 assists and two service aces.
The Blue Jays return to action for a pair of matches on Saturday, October 16 in Allentown, PA. Hopkins will square off against conference opponent Muhlenberg at 12 pm, before facing Montclair St. in non-conference action at 2 pm.
