Hopkins Falls In Conference Home Opener to Haverford, 3-2
Oct. 4, 2008 BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team dropped its first home game this season to No. 24 Haverford in five sets, 3-2. The Blue Jays held off a strong Haverford attack, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Fords as Hopkins slips to 14-5, while Haverford improves to 15-4 on the season. In the first set, Hopkins took a 2-0 lead, by Blue Jay errors gave Haverford the advantage throughout the set, taking their largest lead of the set, 20-16. Hopkins battled back to tie it at 22, but a Rebecca Salvo tip ended the set, 25-23. The second set saw much excitement, with the Hopkins tying the score 19 times en route to a 33-31 victory. With the score knotted at 30-30, junior Rhea Alexander tipped the ball over for a point. Haverford answered back for a point and freshman Sarah Feicht recorded a kill to give Hopkins the lead, 32-31. A Haverford attack sailed out of bounds, giving Hopkins the second set victory. In the third set, Hopkins faced a 12-20 deficit. The Blue Jays rallied for an 11-5 run, but it wasn't enough to fly past the Fords. Haverford notched a kill to tie it at 23-23 and sealed the deal with a Hopkins attack error and another kill, taking the set 25-23. Up 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Haverford jumped to an early 3-1 lead. Hopkins retaliated, leading by as many as six in the set. Haverford battled to within three points but an Adrienne Young Kill gave Hopkins the win in the fourth set, 25-22. Hopkins tied the score four times in the fifth set before falling behind, 9-12. Haverford notched the next three points to claim the fifth set, 15-9 and the match, 3-2. Senior Amanda Lewis led the way for Hopkins with a triple-double of 42 assists, 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior Alex Zenoff added 11 kills, while Feicht had 12 kills and three blocks. Senior Adrienne Young had 8 kills and five blocks for the Blue Jays.
Three Fords finished with double-doubles. Rebecca Salvo had 20 kills and 19 digs, while her twin sister Rachel Salvo recorded 10 kills and 18 digs. Franny Glick added 17 kills and 15 digs for Haverford. The Blue Jays return to Centennial Conference action as they travel to Gettysburg on October 8. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. |
