BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team played host to NYU, Eastern, and Capital today for the JHU Alumni Invitational. The Blue Jays their three matches on the day to fall to 9-14 on the year, while NYU won its three matches on the day, Eastern was 2-1, and Capital went 1-2.

JHU opened today's action against NYU and fell, 3-1 (24-30, 22-30, 30-27, 17-30). Junior Samantha Raggi (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) tallied a team-high 14 kills in 35 attempts and added four blocks. Sophomore Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) collected 24 assists to go with 13 digs, while senior Courtney Cromwell (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) posted a team-high 14 digs.

The Blue Jays then faced Capital in their second match and were defeated, 3-0 (24-30, 24-30, 25-30) despite 17 kills from junior Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood). Freshman Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul IV) chipped in with eight kills, while Baydala led the Blue Jays with 31 assists and nine digs.

Hopkins concluded the invitational versus 25th ranked Eastern. The Blue Jays won the first game, 30-23, but Eastern took control of the match and won the final three games. Kaliades led Hopkins with 22 kills, while senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) collected 12 kills and nine blocks, just one block shy of the school record for a four-game match.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday, October 2 as Hopkins opens Centennial Conference action at home versus Haverford at 7:00 p.m.
