GETTYSBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team returned a 1-1 slate from the second day of the Battlefield Classic. The Blue Jays downed Richard Stockton. 3-1, before suffering its first loss of the season to Salisbury, 3-0. The Blue Jays and head coach Greg Giovanazzi opened the season 7-0, the best start in program history. Giovanazzi is the only head coach in program history to record seven straight wins to open the season.

Hopkins lost its first set to Richard Stockton, 25-19 before taking the next two sets to force a fourth. The Blue Jays won the second set, 25-18 and the third, 25-21. Stockton came close in the fourth set and forced Hopkins to an extra point before falling to JHU, 26-24.

Senior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) had 40 assists and 17 digs lead Hopkins in its 3-1 win over Stockton. Junior middle blocker Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS) assembled 19 kills, which ties sixth in the JHU record book for kills in a match.

Salisbury defeated Hopkins in the second match of the day, 3-0. Hopkins came out slow against Salisbury, losing the first set, 12-25. The Blue Jays were unable to close the deal in the second and third sets, dropping both 20-25. Salisbury handed Hopkins its first loss of the season under Giovanazzi.

Freshman Melissa Cole (Walnut, CA/Walnut) had 13 digs for Hopkins, while freshman Sarah Feicht (Austin, TX/James Bowie) and Zenoff each had six kills.

Lewis was named to the Battlefield Classic All-Tournament Team. she averaged 6.9 assist per game in the tournament.
 

 

The Blue Jays return to action on September 12 for the Ducks Classic, a two-day tournament in Hoboken, NJ.
