The Blue Jays lost a tough battle with Gallaudet in the first set, 25-22, before jumping to a 6-1 lead in the second set off of three consecutive aces from sophomore Brittany Zimmer (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East). Zimmer would record two more aces and lead Hopkins to a commanding 25-12 victory in the second set. In the fourth set, the Blue Jays led 5-1 and by as many as six before the Bison tied it at 17. Hopkins lost the lead two more times before the end of the set as Gallaudet won 25-23 to force a fifth set. Although Hopkins never trailed in the fifth set, Gallaudet pounded five straight points to tie it at 12. On a Bison ball handling error, the Blue Jays led 14-13 before recording the final point of the match on an Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS) kill. Sophomore K.C. Stingl (Mission Viejo, CA/Vivian Webb) had 11 kills and 18 digs to lead Hopkins, while senior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) had 33 assists. The second set saw two lead changes as both teams traded points. The Red Dragons led 20-18 before the Blue Jays surged to a 25-23 victory. Cortland held the advantage for all of the third set, leading by as many as six points. Hopkins battled to cut the deficit to 23-22 before Cortland ended the set on two straight kills. Hopkins mounted a come-back in the fourth set to tie it at 21-21 before Cortland took four of the next five points to end the set, 25-22. In the deciding set, Hopkins and Cortland were tied at 11-11 before a freshman Sarah Feicht (Austin, TX/James Bowie) kill to give Hopkins the lead. The score was tied again at 12-12 before the Blue Jays recorded the last three points, including an ace from sophomore Alica Diehl (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) to end the match. Freshman Melissa Cole had nine kills and 28 digs to lead Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays remain undefeated and will return to action on Saturday in the Battlefield Classic. |
