BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team won a pair of matches in the JHU Invitational Friday evening at Goldfarb Gymnasium to open its season with a 2-0 record. The Blue Jays came from behind to beat Goucher in the opening match before knocking over Widener in four sets.

Goucher took the first set by three points, 25-22, before Hopkins returned for an easy 25-8 victory in the second set. The Blue Jays used an 11-0 run, keyed by senior Fiorella Castillo, who served 11 unanswered points, to fueled the victory in set two.

Goucher led by as many as five points en route to a close 25-21 victory in the third set to lead the match 2-1. The Blue Jays were up 23-19 in the fourth set before a Goucher service error, and a kill by junior Allison Cappelaere secured the set and evened the match at 2-2.

Both teams battled point-for-point in the deciding set before landing in a tie at 13. Hopkins grabbed the final two points to secure its 13th straight home victory. Cappelaere led the Blue Jays with 13 kills, while Amanda Lewis added 43 assists. Junior Megan Smith had a double-double for the Gophers with 19 kills and 25 digs.

The Blue Jays faced Widener University in its second match. Hopkins controlled the first set and picked up a 25-18 victory. Widener battled back to take the second set, 25-21, before the Blue Jays took the final two games.

The Pride jumped out to an early 3-1 lead over Hopkins in the third set, but the Blue Jays took the lead for good at 4-3 and never looked back. Hopkins controlled the fourth, leading by as many as 14 taking the set, 25-12.

Alex Zenoff led the Blue Jays with 13 kills, while Lewis had 16 assists. Jamie Ballew had a 21 team-high assists and Devan Green had nine kills for the Pride.

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday to host the final day of the JHU Invitational. Hopkins will face DeSales at 10 a.m. before taking on the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College at 2 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
