Hopkins Opens Outdoor Season at Goucher Invitational March 24, 2002
TOWSON, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor season on Saturday at the Goucher College Invitational. With a small number of athletes entered for the both teams, the women finished in seventh place with 23 total points and the men took eighth with 22 points.
On the women's side, four athletes recorded points led by junior Hilary Knipe, who won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:43.60. Junior Nikki Gross added eight points as she took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.50. Freshman Maureen Kimsey finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run at a 5:23.80 pace and sophomore Rachel Killeen was seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 12:02.00 to round out the top finishers for the women.
Junior Rajeev Mahajan led the men's team as he took second in the high jump with a mark of 6'5" for a total of eight points. Senior Moky Cheung scored in both the shot put and the discus. He was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 37'6 3/4" and fifth in the discus with a toss of 35.00 meters.
Sophomore Dan MacNeil scored three points with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.60 and junior Kevin Johnson added two points in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.80 for seventh place. Junior David Courson rounded out the scoring for the men as he finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:27.70.
The Blue Jays return to action Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30 at the Mary Washington Invitational in Fredericksburg, Virginia starting at 4:00 p.m.
