Hopkins Competes at Swarthmore Final Qualifier
SWARTHMORE, PA -- The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams sent several athletes to the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on Monday, May 16 in an attempt better position those individuals for selection to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships. Final selections for the championships, which are schedule for May 26-28 at Walston Hoover Stadium in Waverly, Iowa, will be announced later this week.
Among the highlights for the Blue Jay contingent at Swarthmore:
Junior Tom Boucher was JHU's lone winner on the day as he placed first in the javelin with a toss of 55.54m. His winning throw in a field of 12 was more than two meters better than the runner-up.
Junior Lara Gaffney posted a personal record of 11:28.64 in the 3000m Steeple Chase. Gaffney placed eighth overall and fifth among Division III competitors.
In a highly-competitive field of 28, freshman Felicia Koerner placed seventh overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the 5000m with a time of 17:45.69.
In the men's 3000m Steeple Chase, Giacomo Taylor posted a personal-best and Johns Hopkins freshman record time of 9:36.29. Giacomo broke the previous JHU freshman record of 9:36.69, which had been set by John McMullin in 2015.
Running the final race of his career, senior Dan Bier clocked in at 4:00.29 in the 1500m.
Freshman Grant Mosser was seventh overall and fifth among collegiate performers in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.14.
