BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field teams prepared for the Centennial Conference Championships as they competed in the University of Pennsylvania Relays and the Millersville Metrics last week. There was no team scoring at either meet.
Hopkins sent a small squad to the Penn Relays, including senior Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) and the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams. Darling was the top Division III finisher and placed third out of 27 in the discus with a throw of 157'0". She also finished fourth in the javelin championship with a season-best throw of 150'9". While the men's 4x400 relay team did not finish, the women placed 12th out of 14 schools with a season-best time of 4:18.70.
The men recorded three top-five finishes at the Millersville Metrics, led by senior Quinlan Amos (Houston, TX), who was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.1 seconds. Junior Justin Leck (Washington, KS/Washington) posted a season-best mark and placed second in the javelin with a throw of 149'5", while senior John Onofrey (Needham, MA/Needham) was fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:08.9.
Freshman Derrick Norgriff (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) also performed well as he finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 38'3.75" and 12th in the discus with a mark of 109'11".
Sophomore Andrea King (Farmington, NM/Farmington) paced the women as she finished third in the shot put with a throw of 35'5", while freshman Joanna Cohen (Roslyn, NY/Roslyn) was 14th in the 200-meter dash with JHU's best 200-meter time of the season (27.7).
In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Maureen Kimsey (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) was 13th and senior Ly-Lan Wisler (Bridgewater, NJ/Peddie School) was 16th with times of 5:10.5 and 5:14.5, respectively.
The Blue Jays return to action Saturday as Hopkins travels to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for the 2003 Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg College.
