Hopkins Competes at ECAC Championships March 6, 2002
BOSTON, MA - Several Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field athletes competed at the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Tufts University last weekend. The men's team totaled two points to finish tied for 41st, while the women did not score.
The men's distance medley relay team highlighted the team's performance as the foursome of junior Jamie Parks, freshman Matt Campbell, sophomore Alex Gochal, and senior captain John Apperson combined to break the school indoor-record. The team recorded a time of 10:32.33 to break the school-record of 10:36.94 set the previous week at the Centennial Conference Championships. JHU's time was good enough to place 15th out of 26 relay teams. The distance medley relay consists of four legs. The leadoff man runs 1,200 meters followed by legs of 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1,600 meters.
The lone Blue Jay to score points on the day was junior Quinlan Amos. Amos recorded a season-best time of 22.76 in the 200-meter dash to finish seventh in a field of 30. He also ran in the 55-meters and recorded a time of 6.66. Freshman Jessica Bylander competed in the 55-meter race on the women's side and finished with a time of 7.60.
Sophomore Aline Bernard highlighted the women's team as she narrowly missed setting a school-record in the 3,000-meter run. Bernard recorded a time of 18:40.43 to eclipse her personal-best by over 18 seconds. She missed setting the school-record by just two tenths of a second and her time was good enough for a 12th-place finish.
Other competitors for JHU were junior Rajeev Mahajan in the high jump and Apperson and junior captain Nikki Gross in the men's and women's 800-meter run, respectively. Mahajan was injured during warm-ups, yet managed to jump 6'1.25" to take 14th place. Apperson recorded a time of 1:58.64, his third fastest of the season, to finish 17th, while Gross finished 30th with a time of 2:27.07. The women's distance medley relay team also competed and took 18th place with a time of 13:17.07.
