The Johns Hopkins men's and women's indoor track teams competed at the Grizzly Invitational last weekend and posted many high placings. More than 20 schools participated at the new indoor facility at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Hopkins was led by junior sprinter Quinlan Amos, who won both the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes. Each race had a field of over 50 athletes. Amos used a good start to record his best ever time (6.4 seconds) in the 55-meter dash. After taking fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.23 meters, which put him among the Centennial Conference leaders for the season, Amos returned to win the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.9 seconds.

Senior captain John Apperson ran a solid 1500-meter race, taking second with a time of 4:11. Junior Brian Nichols recorded a mark of 14' in the pole vault, good for third place. In his first-ever track race, freshman Matt Campbell finished second in his 200-meter dash section at a 23.8 pace, while junior Kevin Johnson improved his best 55-meter dash time to 6.8 seconds in his heat. Campbell and Johnson both played football for Hopkins in the fall. Junior Rajeev Mahajan managed a second place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6'.

For the women, freshman Jessica Bylander notched a second place finish in the 200-meter dash at a 28.4 pace. She also took fifth in the 55-meter final with a career-best time of 7.4 seconds. Sophomore distance runner Heather Blair moved down to the 800-meter run and claimed third place with a time of 2:23.4.

Junior Hilary Knipe took fourth in the 5000-meter run in 19:42.2 and sophomore Vanessa Keating made a huge improvement in the 3000-meter run to win her section at a 11:30 pace. Freshman Mary O ran had her best-ever 1500-meter race as she finished second in her heat with a time of 5:28.6. Sophomore Aline Bernard dropped down to 1500 meters and claimed seventh place overall among 36 competitors with a time of 5:06.6.

The next event on the schedule is the St. Valentine Invite on Saturday at Boston University. The Blue Jays must qualify in order to participate in the event.
