NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's indoor track teams competed at the College Indoor Classic at Christopher Newport University on Friday and Saturday. Both the men and women had their best meets of the season. The meet featured six Division I schools, including William & Mary, Virginia, Richmond, and Norfolk State. Host Christopher Newport has won 12 NCAA championships.

Almost every JHU athlete had their best performance of the season or of their career. Sophomore Heather Blair qualified for the ECAC championships by finishing third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:54. On Friday, Blair ran the fastest leadoff leg of the distance medley relay, recording a time of 3:47. Hopkins' distance medley relay team took third with a time of 13:38.

Sophomore Aline Bernard, competing in her first season, finished fifth in the 5k run with a personal-best time of 18:58, which qualifies her for the ECAC's. Freshman Andrea King was fourth in the shot put with a mark of 37'01", hitting the ECAC qualifying standard for the third time this season. Freshman Jessica Bylander led all Division III competitors in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.27, and just missed the school-record in the 200-meter race, posting a time of 28.55. Junior Nikki Gross recorded a time of 2:26.34 in the 800-meter run, beating her personal-best by six seconds. Her time was less than one second of the ECAC standard.

On the men's side, junior Rajeev Mahajan was the highlight of the meet, finishing second in the high jump with a leap of 6-8, qualifying him for NCAA's. Mahajan improved his mark by 2 inches for the third meet in a row and is currently ranked eighth in Division III in the high jump. Junior Quinlan Amos ran the second-fastest time of the meet in trials of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.15. Amos finished second in the 200-meter race with a time of 23.22, hitting the ECAC standard for the second time this year.

Senior John Apperson finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.55. Junior Brian Nichols was third in the pole vault with a leap of 13', and the men's distance medley relay team finished second with a time of 11:02, their fastest of the year.
