Matava & Bhamidipati are #1 Seed at ITA Regionals

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis will compete at the 2007 ITA Southeast Regionals this weekend in Fredericksburg, VA. Competition begins Saturday at 8:00 am at the University of Mary Washington. Several Blue Jays are seeded in this year's tournament.

Junior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) is the fourth seed after advancing to the quarterfinals in 2006. The reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Matava went 17-7 in 2007 and is currently 2-2 this season. Sophomore Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) is the fifth seed this year. She also advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2006 regionals. Bhamidipati posted a 21-3 record in her rookie campaign, ending the season with a 16-match win streak. That streak has continued this fall, as she is 2-0 so far. Freshman Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) is the ninth seed.

In the doubles bracket, Matava and Bhamidipati are the #1 seed. The pair went 16-2 last season and earned All-Centennial and All-America honors. They closed out the 2006 season on a six-match win streak. Sophomore Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and Elamir are the sixth seed in the bracket.
