BALTIMORE, MD - Five members of the Johns Hopkins women's tennis team have been named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). In addition, JHU was named an ITA All-Academic Team with a team GPA of 3.29. Earning scholar-athlete honors were Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin), Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango), Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina), Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and Johanna Sheu (Troy, MI/Troy High School).

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

Berlinghof, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.51 GPA, went 17-6 in singles last season, including an 8-0 mark in the Centennial Conference. Blass posted a 6-3 singles record last season while posting a 3.60 GPA in civil engineering. Carr, a 2008 graduate with a degree in biology, went 1-0 in 2008 in singles. Matava, the all-time wins leader at JHU, finished the season with a 21-10 record in singles. She is a neuroscience major with a 3.59 GPA. Sheu, majoring in molecular and cellular biology with a 3.90 GPA, saw action in doubles in 2008.
