BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) earned All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week. The pair is the first women's tennis players from Johns Hopkins to earn the honor.
Matava was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year honors, in addition to earning first team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. She posted a 17-7 singles record along with a 19-3 doubles record. Matava already ranks tied for third in school history with 35 career singles wins and seventh with 30 career doubles wins. She was named the Player to Watch in the Atlantic South by the ITA recently. In the nation, Matava ranks #48 in singles and #8 in doubles with Bhamidipati. In the region, she ranks 11th in singles and second in doubles.
Bhamidipati also earned first team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles this season. She went undefeated in Centennial singles matches at 10-0 and finished the season at 21-3. Her 21 singles wins are a school single-season record, besting Matava's mark of 18 in 2006. She ended the season with a 16-match win streak in singles play. Bhamidipati is ranked #49 in the nation in singles and #12 in the region.
Bhamidipati and Matava were key parts of the most successful team in school history. Hopkins won its first ever Centennial Conference Championship in 2007 and earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays won a school-record 17 matches this season, including an undefeated 10-0 record in the Centennial. The team also broke records for consecutive wins (11) and matches played (21).
