Johns Hopkins Finishes Season Ranked 12th by ITA
June 24, 2010
BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team capped another great season with a ranking of 12th in the final poll of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Blue Jays are ranked in the final poll for the fourth straight season and are in the top 15 for the third time in the last four years. Hopkins is also ranked fourth in the Atlantic South. Hopkins tied the school record with 17 wins this season while claiming its fourth straight Centennial Conference title and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Blue Jays have been ranked nationally for 27 consecutive polls, a streak that dates back to November 22, 2006. Hopkins has been ranked in the top 15 in nine of the last 11 polls, and in 16 of the last 27. The Blue Jays graduate just two starters out of eight from this year's 16-9 team. In addition, head coach Chuck Willenborg will welcome in a freshmen class that is ranked fourth in Division III by tennisrecruiting.net. In addition to the team's ranking, recent graduate Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School), rising junior Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) and rising sophomore Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School) are all ranked. Bhamidipati and Warren are tied for 10th nationally in doubles and are ranked fourth in the Atlantic South. In singles, Warren is 15th in the nation and fourth in the region, while Krishnan is 29th and seventh, respectively. Bhamidipati is also ranked 25th in singles in the region. Warren's ranking of 15th by far surpasses the previous best for a Johns Hopkins women's tennis player. She had set the mark at the end of last season when she was ranked 36th in the final poll. Her ranking of fourth in the Atlantic South also ties a program record. Warren went 19-11 this season in singles and earned All-Centennial Conference and ITA All-America honors. She enters her junior season with a career singles mark of 37-19, ranking her seventh in school history. In doubles, she and Bhamidipati paired to go 9-8 and earned All-Centennial and ITA All-America honors. Bhamidipati concluded her career with a doubles mark of 57-26, good for third in school history. She also ranks third in school history in total wins with 117 (60 singles wins).
Krishnan earns a national ranking for the first time after being ranked as high as sixth in the region this season. She went 19-8 in singles and 18-11 in doubles to earn All-Centennial Conference honors in both. Her 37 total wins this season are tied for the most in a single-season in program history. Ranked 29th in the nation, she is the highest ranked freshman in program history. |
