Bhamidipati, Matava Earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Honors

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins women's tennis players Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) have earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the second straight year. The pair earned second team honors on the District II At-Large team. Bhamidipati and Matava led JHU to a 14-3 record, its third straight Centennial Conference title and the NCAA Sweet 16. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Sports eligible under the at-large program include: women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling. Bhamidipati, a second team selection last season, went 14-4 in singles and 14-4 in doubles this season. She earned First Team All-Centennial Conference honors in singles for the third straight season after going 6-0 in conference matches. The junior earned All-Centennial Conference honors in doubles as a freshman and a sophomore. She finished the season ranked second in program history in singles wins (53), third in doubles (46) and second in total wins (99). A 2007 All-American, she holds the program record for consecutive wins (21), wins in a season (21) and conference wins in a season (10). Bhamidipati is a Dean's List student and boasts a 3.59 cumulative GPA as a neuroscience major. She has conducted research at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute and volunteered at Shepherd's Clinic.
Johns Hopkins winningest tennis player, male or female, Matava repeats as a second team all-district selection. She went 14-6 in singles and 12-6 in doubles this season to earn First Team All-Centennial Conference honors in singles and doubles. She is a four-time first team all-conference selection in singles and three-time selection in doubles. Matava graduates with 70 singles wins, 58 doubles wins and 128 total wins. A 2007 All-American in doubles and the Centennial Conference Player of the Year, she is the only women's player in program history with 100 or more career wins. She is a Dean's List student, a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Dean Student Advisory Committee. Matava graduated on Thursday with a degree in neuroscience and a minor in theatre arts and a 3.74 cumulative GPA. |
