FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Freshman Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) advanced to the semifinals to lead the Johns Hopkins women's tennis team's participation at the 2008 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Junior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) made her third consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals.

Warren opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jackie Burr of Salisbury. She followed that with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michelle Meadows (Mary Washington). In the round of 16, Warren picked up a big win as she defeated seventh-ranked Lauren Claire (Washington & Lee) in three sets. She then beat Meg Spalitta (Washington & Lee) 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Warren's run finally came to end at the hands of eventual champion, Laura Chen (Carnegie Mellon) 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Bhamidipati did not drop a game in her opening round match against Alexis Hickman (Swarthmore). In the round of 32, she defeated Amy Sheetz (Mary Washington) 6-3, 6-2. Bhamidipati followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Danielle Rosenfeld (Carnegie Mellon). In the quarterfinals, she lost 7-5, 6-1 to Courtney Chin (Carnegie Mellon). After advancing to the second round as a freshman, sophomore Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) made it to the round of 16. She opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Helen Fisun (Haverford). She then beat Courntey Goimarac (Mary Washington) 6-2, 6-1. She then fell to Spalitta in three sets.

Junior Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) won her first round match, beating Jenn Powell (Muhlenberg) 6-1, 7-5. She then lost in the second round, 6-4, 6-3 to Trelsie Sadler (Washington & Lee). Sophomore Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) also advanced to the second round, after beating Maggie Bai (Hollins) 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round. Freshman Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) won in the first round, beating Virginia Edahl (Sweet Briar) 6-0, 6-1.
 

 

In the Blue Draw, freshmen Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Doylestown) advanced to the quarterfinals. Boger won 6-2, 6-0 over Leslie Polaski (Sweet Briar) in her first match. She then defeated Anna Perocchi (Byrn Mawr) 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. In the round of 16, Boger won 8-4 over Joceyln Lewis (Mary Washington) before falling 8-2 to Laura Pattillo (Washington & Lee) in the quarters.

In doubles action, Bhamidipati and Dywer advanced to the round of 16 in the championship draw. The pair won its opening round match over Kelly Fahrner and Rachel Iosue (Salisbury) 9-7. Bhamidipati and Dwyer then fell 8-1 to Chin and Ashley Herrick. Warren and Willenborg lost 8-3 in their opening round match to Ann Morris and Ellen Yeatman of Washington & Lee. Elamir and senior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) lost in the first round, 8-6 to Sadler and Lauren Lukas. Boger and junior Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) fell 8-1 to Spalitta and Catherine Reed in their first round match.

The ITA Southeast Regional Championship concludes the fall portion of Hopkins schedule. The Blue Jays will return to action on February 22, 2009 when the George Washington Colonials visit Baltimore. The match is slated to begin at noon.
