FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team had a successful first day at the 2009 ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday. Six of the eight Blue Jays in the Championship Singles draw advanced to the round of 16, three more than any other team. Hopkins has never had more than three players advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Regional.

Sophomore Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview), the fourth seed in the tournament, dropped just one game in her opening round win over Emily Swarr (Elizabethtown). She then beat Kelly Hart (Carnegie Mellon) 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16 and a Sunday match-up with ninth-seeded Jen Snyder (Washington & Lee).

Sophomore Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas), seeded ninth, opened the day with a straight sets win over Jessica Russell (Elizabethtown), 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, she downed Lydia Bull (Washington College) in three sets. Bull won the first set, 6-3, before Willenborg rallied to win the second, 6-2, and third, 6-1. She will face Laura Chen (Carnegie Mellon), the 2009 ITA Rookie of the Year and the top-seed, on Sunday in the round of 16.

Freshman Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School), also seeded ninth, opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Karen Lavi (Haverford). In her second match, she defeated Emilia Vuorela (AVR) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Krishnan will meet second-seeded Ellen Yeatman (Washington & Lee) on Sunday.

Junior Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jaclyn Porter (Haverford). In the second round, she knocked out eighth-seeded Jordan Finnegan (Washington College) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Elamir will face Katrina Lynn (WU) in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Freshman Ariel Several (Gladwyne, PA/Friends' Central School) did not drop a game in her first round win over Stacy Moon (Grove City). In her second match, took out ninth-seeded Kathryn Schafer (Mary Washington), 6-1, 7-6 (5). Several will now face two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year and the #3 seed in Rachel Wallwork (Swarthmore) on Sunday.
 

 

Freshman Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) rallied for a three-set win over ninth-seeded Jackie Burr (Salisbury), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. She then beat Casey Malcolm (Mary Washington) in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-0 to advance to a third round matchup with fifth-seeded Courtney Chin (Carnegie Mellon) on Sunday.

Senior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township), the sixth seed, dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Melanie Nolt (WU). In the consolation bracket, she will face Jennifer Chui (Carnegie Mellon) in the first round. Senior Ellen Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) dropped her first round match to seventh-seeded Courtney Goimarac (Mary Washington) 6-0, 6-2. In the consolation bracket, she is set to face Campbell McNicol (Washington College) in the first round.

In the Blue 1 Singles draw, the Blue Jays had a pair advance to the quarterfinals. In the top half of the draw, freshman Yoko Hirase (Plano, TX/Plano West) beat Meredith Lackey (Franklin & Marshall), 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. She will face Megan Mathias (BWC) in the quarterfinals on Sunday. In the bottom half of the draw, sophomore Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) won her first round match, 6-2, 6-0 over Angela Tenaglia (Salisbury). She will take on Laura Dodson (Roanoke) in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

In the Blue 2 Singles draw, freshman Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, CA/Valencia) advanced to the quarterfinals by default. She then lost to Christina Douglas (Washington & Lee), 6-4, 5-7, 10-4.

In the Championship Doubles draw, Hopkins had two doubles pairs advance to the round of 16. Elamir and Several won their first round match, 8-0, over Porter and Fumiko Shogase (Haverford). The pair will square off against Wallwork and Emily Rosenblum (Swarthmore) on Sunday in the round of 16. Krishnan and Warren, seeded third, beat Ann Morris and Catherine Reed (Washington & Lee) 8-5 in their opening round. They will face Hart and Alisa Liebowitz (Carnegie Mellon) on Sunday. In other first round action, Ellen Berlinghof and Boger faced a tough task in Chen and Ashley Herrick (Carnegie Mellon), the top seed and 2009 NCAA Semifinalist. Chen and Herrick won 8-3 to advance to the round of 16. In the bottom half of the draw, Andrea Berlinghof and Bhamidipati lost a heartbreaker, 9-7, to Tenaglia and Jillian Poppe (Salisbury).

In the Blue 1 Doubles draw, Hirase and Willenborg are set to square off against Alexis Donner and Xiaoqiao Zhang (WU) in the round of 16 Sunday. While in the Blue 2 Doubles draw, Wu is pairing up with Christina Brant (Carnegie Mellon). The pair is set to play Nina Bollag and Liz Killion (Guilford) on Sunday.
