SWARTHMORE, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened the 2009-10 season at the Swarthmore Invitational last weekend. The Blue Jays were dominant in the singles, winning three of the four singles flights. Sophomore Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) won the A Flight, while freshman Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School) won the B Flight and freshman Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) won the D Flight.

Warren did not drop a game in beating Karen Lavi of Haverford in her opening round match. She then beat Megan Doran of Delaware, 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the second. She followed with a super-tiebreaker win over Swarthmore's Emily Rosenblum. She lost the first set 6-3, before winning the second 6-1 and forcing a super-tiebreaker, which she won 10-6. In the finals, Warren defeated two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Rachel Wallwork of Swarthmore, 6-1, 6-4.

Krishnan opened her career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fumiko Shogase of Haverford. She then beat Montserrat Ripoll of Delaware, 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the second round. Krishnan wrapped up pool play with a win over Kelsey Johnson of Swarthmore, 6-2, 7-5. She then beat classmate Ariel Several (Gladwyne, PA/Friends' Central School) 6-2, 6-3 in the B Flight finals. Several opened the day with a 5-7, 7-5, 11-9 win over Ivana Petrich of Delaware. She then dropped just one game in beating Rose DuBrin of Swarthmore in the second round.

Senior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) dropped her first round match, 6-2, 6-2 to Elena Berry of Delaware. She then lost to Wallwork, 7-5, 6-0 in the second round. She wrapped up round-robin play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jaclyn Porter of Haverford. Berlinghof beat Tayler Tucker of Swarthmore without dropping a game in her first career match. She then beat teammate, Vanessa Charubhumi (East Elmhurst, NY/Stuyvesant) 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. In her third round match, she won by default to advance to the D Flight finals. There she beat her older sister, senior Ellen Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) 6-1, 6-1.
 

 

Freshman Yoko Hirase (Plano West/Plano, TX) dropped her opening round match to Kristen Mueller of Delaware, 6-4, 7-6 (3). She rebounded with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Gibson of Haverford in the second round. She fell to Amanda Halstrom of Delaware, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round.

Senior Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) won her first round match without dropping a game over Alice Laughlin of Swarthmore. She then beat Hannah Silverstein of Haverford, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. She lost in the third round to Ellen Berlinghof, 6-4, 6-3. Berlinghof won her first match, beating Silverstein, 6-0, 6-2. She then beat Laughlin 6-2, 6-0 in the second.

Charubhumi won her opening round match without dropping a game against Liz Gallo of Haverford, before falling to Andrea Berlinghof in the second. In the third round, she beat Tucker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) dropped her first round match, 6-1, 6-2 to Samantha Carnall of Delaware. She did not drop a game in her second and third round matches, beating Celia Tong of Haverford and Dina Zingaro of Swarthmore.

In doubles action, Bhamidipati and Several advanced to the semifinals of the A Flight with a first round win over Lavi and Bradley. The pair then lost to Petrich and Halstrom in the semis, 8-2. In the consolation finals, Bhamidipati and Several lost 8-2 to Rosenblum and Wallwork. Also in the A Flight, Ellen Berlinghof and Boger lost their first round match, 9-7, to Berry and Ripoll. In the consolation bracket, the pair beat Shogase and Porter, 8-3, before beating Lavi and Bradley 8-5.

In the B Flight, Krishnan and Andrea Berlinghof advanced the finals where they lost to Doran and Carnall, 9-7. The pair beat Gibson and Tong in the first round, 8-3, and then beat Tucker and Mueller, 8-2, to advance to the finals. In the other half of the bracket, Hirase and Charubhumi won their first round match, 8-5, over Zingaro and Johnson. They then lost in the semifinals, 8-5, to Doran and Carnall. Hirase and Charubhumi then won the third-place match, 8-3, over Tucker and Mueller.

Hopkins returns to action at the Oberlin Invitational, September 18-20.
