FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis beat 24th-ranked Vassar, 5-0, in the NCAA Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington Outdoor Courts. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 18-5 on the season and sends them to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Brewers see their season end at 16-6.

Hopkins took a quick 1-0 lead in the match with sophomore Hailey Hogan and junior Nandita Krishnan's 8-1 win at first doubles over Ava Sadeghi and Joy Backer. Freshmen Elaine Baik and Stephanie Rettig followed with an 8-5 win over Hannah Van Demark and Lindsay Kantor at third. Sophomore Abby Clark and freshman Shannon Herndon closed out doubles play with an impressive comeback. The duo trailed 4-0 at second and came back to win 8-4 over Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro to send Hopkins into singles play with a 3-0 lead.

Clark quickly pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0 in the match as she needed only the minimum 12 games to defeat Jennifer Ruther at fifth singles. Hogan then clinched the win and the NCAA Quarterfinal berth with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Beckerman at first singles.

Hopkins will face second-ranked Chicago in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Monday, May 21 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, NC. The two met earlier this year with the Maroons winning, 6-3, at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in early March.
