BALTIMORE, MD - The #15 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated Washington College 5-1 in the Centennial Conference Semifinals 5-1 on Saturday. The Blue Jays will be making their first ever appearance in the Centennial Championship match. Hopkins has now won a school-record 15 matches this season and is 15-3 overall. Washington falls to 9-10 on the season.

Hopkins took a 2-1 lead in the match after wins at first and third doubles. Junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) picked up the first point for the Blue Jays with an 8-2 win at third over Kristen Hossick and Rebecca Davis. The pair has now won nine straight and is now 17-3 on the season, breaking the school single-season record for doubles wins. Sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township), the third ranked doubles pair in the Atlantic South, won 8-5 at first. They beat Allison Daciek and Kellie Foster to improve to 13-2 on the season. Lydia Bull and Kate Barston grabbed a point for the Shorewomen with an 8-5 win at second over senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) and freshman Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin).

The Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead when Gulnik defeated Foster 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles. That win was the 48th of her career, tying the school record for singles wins with Zeena Abdi '97. Berlinghof then pushed the match score to 4-1 with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Ryoko Sawada at sixth. Busch clinched the match for Hopkins with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth over Carrie Palmer. First, second and third singles went unfinished as the Blue Jays had already clinched the win.
 

 

Hopkins will face the winner of the second semifinal match between #2 Swarthmore and #3 Franklin & Marshall. The championship match is set for 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 29 at Johns Hopkins.
