Puri, Liang Lead Hopkins At Centennial Women's Tennis Championships

Swarthmore, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team made a good showing at the 2004 Centennial Conference Championships with unseeded freshman Priya Puri (Wayzata, MN/The Blake School) pulling off the biggest upset of the first day of competition. Below is a recap of JHU's individuals and doubles performances at the championships: Singles
o Puri was one of two Blue Jays to advance to the quarterfinals. She opened with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Franklin & Marshall's Barbara Bee, who had defeated her in straight sets during the regular season. Puri then pulled off the only upset of one of the top four seeds in the round of 16 as she stunned second-seeded Gena Ross of Muhlenberg, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-4) to advance to the quarterfinals. On Saturday Puri fell to Dickinson's Melissa Sviatko 6-2, 6-2 in the quarters.
o Junior Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) gave the Blue Jays two participants in the quarterfinals as she picked up a pair of wins in her first two matches. The seventh-seeded Liang opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Bryn Mawr's Ianan Butio and added a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dickinson's Erica Tobias in the round of 16. She then fell to top-seeded Anjani Reddy of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday. o Sophomore Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) was unseeded and defeated Bryn Mawr's Bertina Hu, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round before being eliminated by fourth-seeded Caroline Celano of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16. Doubles o Liang and senior Cara Loeys (Surrey, England/American Community School) fell to Franklin & Marshall's Bee and Lizzy Deneberg, 8-1, in the first round of the doubles draw, while freshman Meghan Hasenauer (Weston, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and sophomore Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) dropped a 9-7 decision to the Diplomats' Jennifer Dubow and Katie Gaskins in the opening round. - 30 - |
