Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated Washington College 5-1 in the second semifinal match of the 2008 Centennial Conference Tournament Friday afternoon. The win sets up a rematch of last year's title match, which featured Hopkins and Swarthmore. In the first semifinal match of the day, Swarthmore defeated Muhlenberg 5-2. The Blue Jays are now 14-3 on the season while the Shorewomen fall to 12-6.

The Shorewomen took a 1-0 lead after Allison Daciek and Lydia Bull defeated freshman Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) and sophomore Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) 8-0. Hopkins tied the match at 1-1 after a win at third doubles. Sophomore Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and freshman Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) won 8-2 over Kristen Hossick and Carrie Palmer. Junior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead in the match after their 8-6 win at first doubles. The win for Matava gives her 43 career doubles wins, tying the school record.

Matava quickly pushed Hopkins lead to 3-1 in the match with her win at second singles. She lost just one game in beating Rebecca Davis 6-1, 6-0. Schubert made it a 4-1 match in favor of the Blue Jays with a 6-4, 6-0 win at fifth singles over Kate Barston. Berlinghof clinched the match for Hopkins with a 6-0, 6-3 win at sixth over Palmer.

Hopkins looks to defend its Centennial Conference title on Sunday, April 27 against Swarthmore. The Blue Jays defeated the Garnet 5-4 last season to win the 2007 title. The championship match is set for 11:00 am at the Johns Hopkins tennis courts. In the event of inclement weather on Sunday, the championship match will be played at the Cross Keys Athletic Club in Baltimore.
