The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team cruised past Western Maryland Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Green Terror, 9-0. The Blue Jays, who improved to 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the Centennial Conference, have now won three straight and six of their last seven matches.
Senior Emily Petersen (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) defeated Bayley Fanin 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Lauren Shevchik (Murrysville, PA/Greensburg Central) knocked off Katrina Buckley 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Freshman Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) shut out Darcie Hartwick 8-0 in a pro set at No. 3, and sophomore Cara Loeys (Cobham Surrey, England/American Community School) defeated Sharon Desperak 8-1 at No. 4. Freshman Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) shut out Geneve Kallins 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and sophomore Whitney Austin (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) defeated Kate Mooman 8-0 in a pro set at No. 6.
In doubles action, Petersen and Shevchik won 8-0 at No. 1, Jerath and Liang won 8-1 at No. 2, and Loeys and sophomore Liz Crowe (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) won 8-0 at No. 3.
The Blue Jays return to action Saturday when they travel to Bryn Mawr for a 1 p.m. match.
