Swarthmore Shuts Out Blue Jays, 9-0, In Women's Tennis April 14, 2003
Swarthmore, PA - The Swarthmore women's tennis team improved to 11-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 9-0 win over Johns Hopkins Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays fell to 5-6 overall and 5-3 in league play. Kristina Pao defeated sophomore Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) 7-6 (5), 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Caroline Celano topped sophomore Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Ellie Suzuki bested junior Cara Loeys (Oxshott Surrey, England/American Community School) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, while Emily Townsend needed three sets to outlast freshman Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 4. Megan Speare topped junior Liz Crowe (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, and Sonia Vallabh defeated freshman Pauline Pelletier (Arlington, TX/MB Lamar) 6-0, 7-5 at No. 6. Celano and Townsend defeated Loeys and Liang 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Pao and Suzuki topped Jerath and freshman Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) 8-3 at No. 2.
