Hopkins Falls To Washington College, 6-3, In Women's Tennis April 2, 2002
Chestertown, MD - The Washington College women's tennis team took all three doubles matches to defeat Johns Hopkins, 6-3, Monday afternoon at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shorewomen improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. Freshman Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) stayed perfect in the spring season with a 2-6, 7-5 (10-8) comeback win over Devon Hufnal in the No. 3 singles. Freshman Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and sophomore Liz Crowe (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. DuPont) also won their singles matches in pro sets, as Liang defeated Erin Spatafore 8-3 in No. 5 and Crowe downed Samantha Halpin 9-7 in No. 6. Senior Emily Petersen (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) dropped her match in the No. 1 singles to Ne'ko Browder 6-3, 6-0 and sophomore Cara Loeys (Cobham Surrey, England/American Community School) lost a pro set to Linda Hooks in the No. 4 singles 8-3. Sophomore Lauren Shevchik (Murrysville, PA/Greensburg Central) had to retire in the second set of the No. 2 singles due to illness. Washington won all three of the doubles matches, as Hooks and Vouros needed a tiebreaker to defeat Loeys and Crowe 9-8 (7-5) in the No. 3.
