The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2002 spring season by cruising past Ursinus, 9-0, Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 1-1, while the Bears fell to 1-2.
Senior Emily Petersen (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) defeated Molly George 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles, while sophomore Lauren Shevchik (Murrysville, PA/Greensburg Central) needed a tiebreaker to beat Allison Wagner 2-6, 6-3 (10-8) in the No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 singles Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) improved to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kim Barone, and sophomore Cara Loeys (Cobham Surrey, England/American Community School) easily defeated Lauren Thomas 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles. Freshman Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) breezed past Gretchen Paul in the No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0, and Liz Crowe (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. DuPont) defeated Priscilla Kean 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles.
Peterson and Shevchick took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, Jereth and Liang won 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles match, and Loeys and Crowe won 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles.
The Blue Jays return to action Monday when they travel to Chestertown, MD, to face Washington College.
