JHU Women's Tennis Drops Opener To Mary Washington, 7-2 April 1, 2002
Fredericksburg, VA - Hopkins freshman Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) defeated Lindsay McMahon 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles but it wasn't enough as the Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Johns Hopkins, 7-2, Thursday in the Blue Jays' spring opener. Jerath also teamed up with freshman Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) to win the No. 3 doubles, 8-5, over the Eagles' McMahon and Nellie Hauff. Mary Washington, which improved to 7-2 and is ranked No. 6 in the latest Atlantic South rankings, took the other five singles matches and two doubles matches to pick up the victory. The only other Blue Jay to win a set was sophomore Cara Loeys (Cobham Surrey, England/American Community School), who fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Kim Colwell in the No. 4 singles. Steff Slaughter defeated senior Emily Petersen (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles, and Kary Schneider defeated sophomore Lauren Shevchik (Murrysville, PA/Greensburg Central) 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles. Nancy Clark knocked off Liang 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles, and Dena Heath beat sophomore Whitney Austin (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles.
