Hopkins Men Finish Third, Women Ninth At Miami Invitational

Oxford, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team finished in third place with 1,276 points while the women placed ninth with 679 points at the Miami Invitational. Kenyon won the men's title with 2,209.50 points, while Illinois took the women's title with 1,453 points.
Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led the men's team Saturday by winning the 500 freestyle in 4:27.52, his third victory in three days. Sophomore Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) finished eighth in 4:36.80, while freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) placed 16th in 4:40.37. Freshman Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) finished 19th with a finals time of 4:39.31, junior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Rochester Lourdes) finished 22nd in 4:43.75, and senior Pat Rice (Bangor, ME/Bangor) came in 27th in 4:52.41.
Freshman Zane Hamilton (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.11, while freshman Tyler Harris (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) placed sixth in 2:09.24 and sophomore Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) came in 18th in 2:13.36. Senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) led Hopkins in the 100 freestyle by finishing fifth in 46.45, while junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) placed 12th in 46.63 and senior Mark Levin (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) came in 27th in 48.16. Senior David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led the Blue Jays in two events, as he finished eighth in both the 100 butterfly in 50.43 and in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.43. Freshman Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) placed 23rd in the 100 butterfly in 51.90, while sophomore Brandon Loftus (Milwaukee, WI/Marquette) came in 24th in 52.42. Sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East), who was the lone Hopkins finisher in the 200 backstroke as he came in 14th in 1:53.78, also placed ninth in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.51. Loren Robinson placed 14th in 1:57.95, junior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) was 17th in 1:58.90, and Rice finished 21st in 1:58.03. The JHU 200 medley relay team of Balfour, Harris, Loftus, and Brannock finished fourth in 1:33.18, while the team of Kleinman, Pitz, Lofthus, and Kyle Robinson placed fifth in 1:33.94. The Hopkins 400 freestyle relay team of Loren Robinson, Brannock, Hamilton, and Kyle Robinson finished sixth in 3:06.60, while the team of Sneed, Armstrong, Pitz, and Balfour finished 12th in 3:13.31. The Blue Jay women's team was led by sophomore Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), who finished eighth in the 100 butterfly in 57.89 and 13th in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.56. Freshman Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon) placed 26th in the 100 butterfly, and came in 15th in the 200 backstroke in 2:12.47. Senior Stephanie Harbeson (Harriman, NY/The Peddie School-NJ) finished 11th in the 500 freestyle in 5:04.78, while freshman Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) finished 13th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.78. Freshman Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) led Hopkins in the 100 freestyle by finishing 22nd in 53.92, while sophomore Michelle Phillips (Northridge, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) placed 25th in 54.37. The JHU 200 medley relay team of sophomore Ashley Shively (Moraga, CA/Campolindo), freshman Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield), junior Megan Rudinsky (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), and Phillips finished ninth in 1:50.25, while the team of Redwood, junior Liz Schlicher (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes), sophomore Betsy Maragakes (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), and Stepaniak placed 17th in 1:55.00. The Hopkins 400 freestyle relay team of Redwood, Phillips, Smirnova, and Harbeson finished 10th in 3:37.35, while the team of Stepaniak, Maragakes, freshman Carly Benner (Stockton, CA/Lincoln), and freshman Caitlin Kunkel (Warwick, RI/St. Mary-Academy-Bay View) placed 16th in 3:44.88.
