Johns Hopkins Takes Third at TPSC Invitational

The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's swim team grabbed 537 points on the final day of the TPSC Invitational to finish in third place. Penn won the invitational with 2665 points with host Kenyon finishing in second (1865).
Junior Courtney Cowan won the B final of the 500 Free as she finished in 4:58.03 and sophomore Rabia Syed placed sixth in 5:07.54. Cowan's time is the seventh fastest in program history and an NCAA provisional time. Senior Lindsay Kriz placed second in the C final with a finals time of 5:09.81.
In the 200 Back, freshman Michelle Wang led the way with a seventh-place finish. She posted a provisional time of 2:04.32. Freshman Sami Kegel followed in eighth place with a provisional time of 2:04.60. Sophomore Emily Cheng finished in third in the B final with a career-best time of 2:08.00, while senior Ariana Waitkavicz won the C final in 2:10.68.
Senior Abby Brown grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 Fly with a provisional time of 55.73. Sophomore Natalia Rincon followed in fourth place in 56.45, a provisional time. Both Brown and Rincon posted career-best times in the morning prelim. Senior Shirley Chan (56.75), junior Anna Wisniewski (56.89) and sophomore Elizabeth Dunan (57.17) finished in seventh, ninth and 10th respectively. Chan and Wisniewski also posted NCAA provisional times. Freshman Caroline Ward finished in seventh in the C final with a time of 58.80.
Junior Gwynnie LaMastra picked up another third-place finish for the Blue Jays, this time in the 200 Breast. She clocked in at 2:18.80, the fifth fastest in school history and a provisional time. Junior Sara Wujciak won the B final in 2:23.32, while freshman Therese Larson (2:25.56) took sixth and freshman Sophia Lin (2:28.38) took ninth.
Hopkins placed six swimmers in the finals of the 100 Free, led by freshman Alison Shapiro. She finished in fifth place in the B final with a time of 52.38. Ward placed seventh (52.90) and Cheng placed ninth with a career-best 53.33. Junior Lena Bless took fifth place in the C final as she touched in 53.41. Syed finished in ninth (54.94) and Duncan in 10th (55.15).
Wang led the Blue Jays in the 200 IM with an eighth-place finish and a time of 2:08.96. Kegel followed in ninth place with a time of 2:09.51. Junior Kaitlin Jones won the B final with a provisional time of 2:07.09 and freshman Lauren Parker placed ninth in 2:12.19.
Hopkins ended the weekend with fourth and sixth-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Wisniewski, Shapiro, Cowan and Bless combined for a provisional time of 3:28.80. Wang, Cheng, Ward and Rincon took sixth with a time of 3:31.27.
Johns Hopkins will face East Carolina on January 4 in Jupiter, FL.
