Blue Jays Drop a Close One to the Terps

COLLEGE PARK, MD - In its second straight meet against a Division I opponent, the Johns Hopkins women's swim team lost 102-90 to Maryland Friday afternoon. The meet was highlighted by four wins for the Blue Jays (0-2). Hopkins opened with a third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshman Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) swam the first leg, followed by senior Allie Foster (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central), sophomores Kristen Cunningham (North Potomac, MD) and Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies). The team came in at 1:53.52. In the 1000 Free, freshman Sarah Thomas (Portsmouth, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) took third (11:08.27), while freshman Caitlin Dennis (Moorestown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) took fourth (11:22.33). Freshman Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) placed fourth in the 200 Free (1:59.57). She was followed by Foster in fifth (1:59.69) and freshman Ashley Lopes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) in sixth (2:07.57). The Blue Jays then took fourth through sixth in the 50 Free. Sophomore Elissa Stautner (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge) finished fourth (26.39). Sophomore Katie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) took fifth (26.52) and freshman Robin Schaefer (Dublin, OH/The Columbus School for Girls) placed sixth (27.15). Cunningham took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.64, followed by freshman Krysten Sciacca (Syosset, NY/Syosset) in fourth (2:28.31). The 100 Fly saw Hopkins once again finish fourth through sixth. Qu placed fourth (59.91), followed by Thomas in fifth (1:05.85) and freshman Taylor Mann (Branford, CT/Branford) (1:08.67). In the 100 Free, the Jays finished third through fifth. Rooney placed third (55.74), Stautner took fourth (56.62) and Sciacca finished fifth (1:02.71).
Hopkins closed the meet, taking first in the final four events, including finishing first through third in the final three individual events. It began with Qu winning the 100 Back (1:01.91). Hansen finished second (1:04.44) and Lopes took third (1:08.49). In the 500 Free, it was Cunningham taking first (5:20.25), Zepp took second (5:24.58) and junior Val Neff-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) took third (5:50.12). Foster led the Blue Jays in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:08.33. Dennis took second (1:10.73) and Thomas finished third (1:12.65). Hopkins closed the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay. Rooney swam the first leg, followed by Stautner, Dennis and Zepp. The team finished in 3:50.15. Hopkins returns to action on Saturday morning as Franklin & Marshall visits the Newton White Athletic Center. The meet, which is set to start at 11:00 a.m., will be the first this season for Hopkins against a Division III opponent. |
