CHARLOTTE, NC - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team got podium finishes from freshman Cathy Howard (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) and the 800 Free Relay team on the opening day of the 2010 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship. The Blue Jays sit in second place after the first day, just four points behind host Wingate.
The championship opened with the 1000 Free, with four Blue Jays competing. Howard took bronze with a career-best time of 10:30.70. Sophomore MaryClaire Kozlowski (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) finished in seventh with a season-best time of 10:46.67. Freshman Casey Navin (Madison, NJ/Madison) claimed ninth in a career-best 10:48.89 and junior Kathleen Heslin (Wykoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took 12th, also with a season-best time, in 10:54.85.
Hopkins then took third place in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:50.52, a season-best time by more than 12 seconds and an NCAA B qualifying time. Sophomore Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast), sophomore Margaret Spach (Niguel, CA/Aliso Niguel), freshman Kristen Ferriero (Long Valley, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and sophomore Khristine Ghemigian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) swam the relay for the Blue Jays. Rogers' split of 1:55.20 is a season best time and an NCAA B time.
The Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship continues on Thursday, February 18 in Charlotte, NC. Prelims are scheduled to begin at 10:00 am with finals slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
