CHARLOTTE, NC - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team opened its title defense at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships with a strong showing in the 1000 Free on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays took three of the top six spots in the only event of the day, giving Hopkins 44 points. Hopkins, which has won the last three Bluegrass Mountain Championships, sits atop the standings after the first night with a nine-point lead over Wingate University.
Sophomore Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took silver in the 1000 Free last night with a career-best time of 10:36.38. It is also the fifth fastest time in the 1000 Free in program history. Freshman Heidi Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) took fifth in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:42.77, also a career-best time. Sophomore MaryClaire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) followed in sixth place with a career-best time of 10:44.20.
The championships continue on Thursday, February 12 from the Mecklenberg Aquatic Club. Preliminaries will begin at 10:00 am with finals slated to begin at 6:00 pm. Real time results are available at: http://www.sports.wingate.edu/swimmingmens/livestats/
