Dec. 9, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - Four members of the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team were named All-Mid Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Tuesday. Sophomore Jenn Paulucci (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Boro), junior Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick), sophomore Sarah Gieszl (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) and freshman Erica Suter (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) each received all-region nods for their superior play in 2008 and their roles in a program-first NCAA Third Round appearance. The Blue Jays finished the year ranked No. 6 in the final national polls with an 18-1-4 mark. Paulucci, a first team all-region selection who was also named a First Team NSCAA All-American, led a defense in 2008 that allowed just 12 goals in 23 games and posted 17 shutouts. The sophomore was named First Team All-Centennial as a freshman and was the only unanimous first team selection in 2008. Paulucci also earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team accolades in 2008. The Manalapan, NJ native started in all 23 games and recorded two assists. Paulucci was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for her academic achievements. She was a second team all-region selection as a freshman. Guszkowski, a second team All-Centennial Conference selection, earned a spot on the All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team. Guszkowski finished the season ranked sixth in the national in goals against average (0.378) and seventh in save percentage (.895). The junior goalkeeper earned 13 solo shutouts in 2008 and helped the Blue Jays to a perfect 10-0-0 Centennial Conference record. JHU headed into the NCAA Sweet 16 match up with William Smith unbeaten at 18-0-4 while Guszkowski was first in the nation in goals against average.
Gieszl earned Second Team All-Mid Atlantic Region accolades after leading the Johns Hopkins defense to 17 shutouts. Gieszl received Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors and a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll. Gieszl started in each of her 22 games. Suter, the only freshman to be named All-Mid Atlantic Region in 2008, was named to the third team. The rookie led the Blue Jays with 12 goals and three assists for 27 points in her freshman campaign. Suter was a First Team All-Centennial Conference selection and finished the season with the most goals of any Centennial Conference player. The four 2008 All-Region selections is the most by JHU since 1999. Hopkins returns each of its All-Mid Atlantic Region honorees next season and will look to improve upon a program-best NCAA Third Round appearance. |
