Chapin Named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American
Nov. 20, 2007
BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior Johanna Chapin (Madison, WI/Madison West) was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American women's soccer team. Chapin earned third team honors after being a first team selection to the all-district team earlier this month. She becomes just the second Blue Jay to earn Academic All-American honors joining Lindsey Kimura, who was a two-time honoree.
The senior defender started all 21 games this season and recorded her first career goal against Washington and also had three assists. Chapin was a key member of the defense that has allowed just 0.76 goals per game this year.
She is a Dean's List student with a 3.64 GPA majoring in public health. Chapin is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and serves as a student leader for both the Hopkins Christian Athletes and University Baptist Church. She interned at the Hispanic Apostolate in Baltimore, teaching English as a second language. Last summer Chapin studied abroad in the Dominican Republic and served as an intern on the HIV ward of the hospital providing information to pregnant HIV positive women for prevention education.
Hopkins completed the 2007 season 14-5-2 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Virginia Wesleyan. The Blue Jays won their sixth Centennial Conference title overall and became the first soccer team in Centennial Conference history to win three straight titles.
To be nominated for the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
