Steele and Lombardi Earn Centennial Player of the Week Honors
Nov. 6, 2006 LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins sophomore Molly Steele (Daleville, VA/North Cross) and senior Sarah Lombardi (Manchester, CT/Loomis Chaffee) earned Centennial Conference Player of the Week honors as was announced by the conference office on Monday. The pair becomes the fifth and sixth members of the Blue Jay women's soccer team to earn player of the week honors this year.
Steele earned the Offensive Player of the Week honors as she provided all the offense Hopkins would need to claim its second straight Centennial Conference title on Sunday. Steele scored the game-winning goal at 34:24 of the first half of the championship game against Swarthmore. Teammate Kaitlin Giannetti controlled a ball on the near side and crossed it to Steele, who tapped the ball, slipped inside a defender and one-timed a shot inside the far post past Swarthmore's Lauren Walker for her 10th goal of the year.
Lombardi earned the Defensive Player of the Week honors as she anchored a Blue Jay defensive unit that turned in a strong performance over the weekend. The Hopkins defense allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of action over the weekend. She was key part of a unit that allowed just two shots during the win over Muhlenberg and eight shots in the win over Swarthmore.
Steele, Lombardi and the rest of the Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, November 11th when they face Salisbury in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That game to be hosted by Christopher Newport University is set to begin at 5 p.m.
