Oct. 30, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - Juniors Jenn Paulucci (Manalapan, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Sarah Gieszl (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier College Prep) of the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team have been honored by the College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA). The two Blue Jays have been named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 teams. This brings Hopkins' total all-district selections to 16. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Both Paulucci and Gieszl are defenders on a Johns Hopkins defense that has allowed only seven goals this season and has posted 11 shutouts. They have both started in all 16 games for the Blue Jays this season. Both were second team selections last year while leading the Blue Jays to a record of 17 shutouts in a single season. Paulucci earned first team honors. Off the field, she interned at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. She is an active volunteer with Relay for Life and with Catechism classes at her church. Paulucci is a member of the BME Design Team at JHU and serves as an SAT tutor. She is also active with the Lose the Shoes Grassroot soccer initiative. A Biomedical Engineering major, Paulucci boasts a GPA of 3.96. Being a District 2 First Team selection, Paulucci will go on the national ballot. The results for the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams will be released on November 17. Gieszl, a second team selection, completed field studies in Ghana (January, 2009) and Bangladesh (January, 2008) with the Harvard School of Public Health. She interned with the Sabiny Elders Association (Uganda) and The Girl Child Network (Kenya) in the summer of 2009. She tutors reading and writing in the JHU Tutorial Initiative at a Baltimore City library and is also a Woodrow Wilson Research Fellow. Gieszl is a Public Health and Anthropology major and has a cumulative GPA of 3.52.
