Complete Release in PDF Format
BALTIMORE, MD - Jumpin' Jays: Johns Hopkins moved up six places in the latest NSCAA Poll to No. 9 after tying then-No. 2 Messiah, 0-0, on September 10. It is the highest ranking since November 7, 2006 and just the second appearance in the NSCAA national top-ten in program history. The Blue Jays earned a No. 8 ranking and ended the season with a 18-2-1 slate. Fighting the Falcons: The No. 15 Blue Jays held strong against No. 2 Messiah for 110 minutes, tying 0-0. Messiah was not able to break through a Hopkins defense that had yet to allow a goal in its previous five games. Squaring Off Against The Seahawks: Sophomore Allie Zazzali (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) scored the equalizer at 60:16 to tie St. Mary's College, 2-2, but Johns Hopkins was unable to break the draw through two overtime periods. Junior Caitlin Moore (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) tied the score at 1-1 with her first goal of the season at 17:44. Moore now has five points on the season. At The Top: Junior goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) leads the Centennial Conference with four shutouts this season. The Blue Jays also own a conference-best five shutouts in 2008. Follow The Leader: Head coach Leo Weil clinched his 195th career win at Johns Hopkins against Misericordia on September 3. Weil has the most victories (all opponents) among active Centennial Conference coaches, as he continues to close in on the 200-win mark. And The Winner Is: Sophomore Erin Stafford (Doylestown, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) leads the team with two game-winning goals. She recorded one game-winner in her rookie season and has already tallied two in 2008. On Her Roll: Sophomore Sarah Gieszl (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier College Prep) earned a spot on the Centennial Conference Honor Roll (9/15) for her outstanding performance against then-No. 2 Messiah. Gieszl blocked one shot against the Falcons. Up Next: Hopkins will host Washington College on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at Homewood Field. The match is part of a two-game homestand for the Blue Jays as they will host Swarthmore, another conference foe, on Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m. Hopkins has claimed a victory in each of its nine games played against Washington since 1999. The Blue Jays earned a 9-0 shutout against the Shorewomen in their last meeting on September 15, 2007. The Blue Jays captured their largest margin of victory of 2007 against Washington during that match.
