Nov. 22, 2008
GENEVA, NY - The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team spent 10 weeks on a wild ride assembling an 18-0-4 record entering Saturday's NCAA Division III third round game against William Smith. It took the Herons just under 18 minutes to ensure the ride wouldn't last into the national quarterfinals as William Smith scored three times in the first 17:43 and cruised to a 3-1 win against the visiting Blue Jays Saturday afternoon. William Smith improves to 15-1-5 and will play Amherst on Sunday with a trip to the national semifinals on the line. The greatest season in the history of the Johns Hopkins women's soccer comes to an end at 18-1-4.
Brelynn Nasypany opened the scoring on the snow-covered field with the first of her two goals at the 11:49 mark as she headed home a corner kick from Rayza Santiago. The one-goal lead held for just under six minutes when Nasypany struck again. The Herons played the ball into the box on a corner, but the Blue Jays were unable to clear it away. After a scramble. Nasypany collected the loose ball in front and floated a shot into the back left corner for her 15th goal of the season.
It took just 20 seconds for William Smith to strike again as Kate Redmond collected a loose ball in front of the goal after Johns Hopkins goalie Karen Guszkowski failed to secure it and quickly poked home her fourth goal of the season. The Herons outshot the Blue Jays 7-0 in the first half and took the 3-0 lead into intermission.
Johns Hopkins picked up the pace after halftime and broke through in the 61st minute as Caitlin Moore slipped a rebound past William Smith goalie Amanda Davis to make it 3-1. Freshman Alison Smith's original shot was saved by Davis, but she failed to control the rebound and Moore slipped home her fifth goal of the season.
The Blue Jays outshot Willam Smith 8-6 in the second half, but Moore's goal was the only shot that eluded Davis, who made three saves in goal for the Herons. Guszkowski posted six saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who were outshot 13-8 in the game.
